Defibrillators

A defibrillator uses a high-energy electrical current (shock) to stop chaotic, abnormal heart rhythms (ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation). The shock stops the chaos, allowing the heart to rest and return to it's normal rhythm.

Defibrillation goes hand in hand with cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It's early application is essential. The chance of successful defibrillation decreases by 10% every minute.

There are a number of different types and makes of defibrillators. The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used most often in out of hospital cardiac arrests.

The AED must only be applied to the casualty who has been assessed with no sign of life (unconscious, unresponsive, not breathing or moving). Once applied, the AED analyses the heart rhythm, through adhesive pads applied to the casualty's bare chest.

The AED analyses whether the heart is shockable or non-shockable. Where the casualty is non shockable CPR is commenced until further analysis is made.
